A short list of pattern matches I've been collecting. Not conclusions — just observations.
Getting easier
- Producing first drafts of anything (specs, mocks, copy, code).
- Synthesizing user research transcripts.
- Building throwaway prototypes to test a hypothesis.
Getting harder
- Maintaining genuine product taste in a world where every output is "pretty good."
- Knowing what not to build when the cost of building has collapsed.
- Holding the line on quality when speed is suddenly free.
Quietly disappearing
- Status updates as a primary work product.
- "Translation" between disciplines (engineers can read your prompts; designers can read your code).
- The PM-as-project-manager archetype.
The craft isn't going away. It's just moving to a different floor of the building.
